This Short North backyard started with a worn-out wood patio and a yard that held water. Our clients wanted a low-maintenance outdoor living space they could use for years, so we took the project down to the ground and rebuilt it the right way.
What we did
Demolition — Removed the existing wood patio and hauled it off site.
Regrading — Regraded the entire yard so water moves away from the house and the new patio.
Drainage repair — Corrected the downspouts and drainage so runoff no longer pools in the yard or against the foundation.
Engineered base — Installed a properly built paver base: compacted stone, followed by a #8/#9 high-performance bedding mix, tamped and compacted in lifts for a patio that won't shift or settle.
Unilock paver patio — Set Unilock pavers on the prepared base for a clean, durable surface backed by Unilock's lifetime guarantee.
Future-ready lighting — Ran low-voltage wiring beneath the patio so landscape lighting can be added later without tearing anything up.
Finishing touches — Helped the homeowners set up and style their new patio so it was ready to enjoy the day we left.
Why the base matters
Most paver patios fail from what's underneath, not the pavers on top. Proper grading, drainage, and a compacted aggregate base are what keep a patio level and dry through Ohio's freeze-thaw winters. It's the part you'll never see, and it's the part we spend the most time on.
